BRIDGET ST JOHN BBC Radio 1968-1976(Release date: 26 April 2010 (HUX114)

Bridget St. John was one of the first artists to be signed to John Peel’s Dandelion label in 1969.

She recorded 3 albums there before she was signed to Chrysalis Records in 1974. All of those original records have recently been reissued on CD, to wide acclaim.

Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, Bridget made many unique recordings for BBC Radio, mostly for John Peel. None of those recordings have ever been released on CD until now.

Compiled by Bridget herself, this double CD features the best of her BBC radio concerts and sessions, including her very first Peel session, recorded in 1968. Several of these songs are released here for the first time.

This double CD set is packaged in a lavish full colour digipack with an accompanying 20 page colour booklet featuring extensive liner notes, an interview with Bridget, plus several rare photographs from Bridget’s own archive.

The tracks are a mixture of solo and band recordings, and three songs (disc 2, 14-16) are duets with Kevin Ayers. These CDs have been digitally re-mastered by Ron Geesin (who also produced Bridget’s second Dandelion LP in 1971).

RICK WAKEMAN Past, Present & Future Release date March 2010 (MFVP125CD)

Past, Present and Future is a triple CD with each disc on this set reflecting part of the title Past, Present and Future.

As the title implies the album focuses on time and the themes running through it also come under each of the three headings Past, Present and Future.

The album is a solo piano work from Rick and features all new material and comes in a sleeve designed by artist Mark Wilkinson and will no doubt be enthusiastically received by the large and dedicated fan base commanded by Rick.

Sides was originally released in 1979 and features performances from other progressive rock legends such as Mike Giles and John G Perry alongside Ant. The album is possibly the most rock oriented album to come from Anthony Phillips and includes the tracks Nightmare and Um and Aargh.

The album has been unavailable for some time and this reissue will follow on from the reissue of The Geese and the Ghost and Wise After The Event and appeal to the large and dedicated fan base one would expect from a former member of Genesis.

BLACK WIDOW Live (MYSCD666)

This is a real piece of history. The short lived "Sacrifice" stage show that caused such an outcry in the UK, was recorded for German television in 1970 and was in FULL - complete with all the chants, dances and sacrifice of the Naked girl.

The soundtrack to the DVD has been lifted off to provide a CD and DVD package.

Three lads from South Wales are set to widen a growing audience with the release of their third album, Cassandra.

They've been playing music together since 2002 and their latest album shows progress in leaps and bounds.

Guitarist Nick James says that the lead track on the album expands the myth of Cassandra who in Greek mythology was given the gift of prophecy but not of being believed. How could we apply that to the modern world, if at all?

NEIL ARDLEY's NEW JAZZ ORCHESTRA Camden 70 (DUSKCD105)

Between the NJO's first album, Western Reunion (Decca, 1965) and second, Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe (Verve, 1968), Neil Ardley's writing had matured to a point where it was showing serious signs of outgrowing even the highly flexible instrument that the orchestra had become. Under his guidance, the band was now also playing new music by a whole crop of young composers - Mike Taylor, Michael Garrick, Howard Riley and Michael Gibbs among them.

The line-up on this session was substantially the one that had recorded Dejeuner, although there were a few significant absentees including Ian Carr, who was by now touring the world with his pioneering jazz-rock band, Nucleus.

The programme that night was essentially the orchestra's current concert set and drew heavily on Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe, which was still current and selling well. Of the eight numbers on the album, seven are included here (tracks 5 to 11).

Camden '70 measures the extraordinary capabilities of a talent pool the like of which was not to be seen again in a jazz orchestra. This release marks the recording's debut and, together with notes from Dave Gelly and sound engineer Martin Mitchell (on the master tapes restoration) and period images, makes for a truly exciting addition to the jazz and jazz rock aficionado's collection.

NEIL ARDLEY Kaleidoscope of Rainbows (DUSKCD102)

'Kaleidoscope Of Rainbows’ (1976) completed a trilogy of albums and was composed between 1973 and 1975 as a seven-part work for jazz orchestra and performed by an augmented version of Ian Carr's band Nucleus.

Neil Ardley had been commissioned in 1974 by the London Borough of Camden to write a new work to mark the first major jazz festival in the UK for many years. It was held at the Roundhouse in London in October of that year. He had decided to extend the ideas worked out in the previous two albums to complete the trilogy.

'Kaleidoscope of Rainbows’ toured England the following year under the auspices of the Contemporary Music Network of the Arts Council and became its most successful attraction. A final concert before a packed house at the Royal Festival Hall was so well received that Gull Records decided to record and release Neil’s creation.

This Dusk Fire recording was 24 Bit 96 k/Hz digitally-remastered by Miles Showell at Metropolis Mastering, London, December 2004, using original master tapes.
