FEATURED ALBUM: PANIC ROOM
Panic Room

Panic Room was formed following the break-up of UK rock group, Karnataka, and features four members of the original award winning line-up. The band's music ranges from intimate acoustic songs to full-on multi-layered symphonic progressive rock, while retaining a contemporary edge.

With the line-up the quality of the song writing and musicianship will be familiar to fans of the original Karnataka, but Panic Room also experiments with new directions to create an original multi-faceted sound.

It is a grower...and if you like any of the bands alluded to - even Fish - you should find something to enjoy here. 'Endgame (Speed of Life) is a 10 minute epic with Celtic overtones and in places the great Iona come to mind whilst 'I Wonder What's Keeping My True Love Tonight?' evokes latter-day Clannad and a play-out that could be mid-period Yes.

There's a couple of sweet ballads: the sublime 'Firefly', and 'Moon On The Water', whilst 'Reborn' has a more commercial approach.
The magnum opus has to be the 14 minute 'The Dreaming'. Typically atmospheric and dramatic, and no doubt a focal point for their stage show. It has a flavour of a Celtic lament evoking all those crossover prog bands you've ever liked - their Welsh compatriots Magenta (especially Magenta), Iona, Capercaillie. And, yes, Karnataka and The Reasoning. All wonderfully precise and well executed.

FEATURED ARTIST: MAGENTA
Magenta

The success of Revolutions in 2001 - a studio-only project conceived by keyboards/guitarist Rob Reed - led to public demand for live shows from which Magenta developed. In 2004, the band released their second album Seven and a double live set Another Time, Another Place.

The band picked up several progressive rock awards, and  2005 saw the release of the band's first live DVD and prize for Best Band at the Classic Rock Society end of year awards ceremony.

2006 saw the final release of the bands third album Home which also included the additional disc New York Suite. The band also recorded the single Night and Day with the legendary Annie Haslam, to great acclaim.

2007 saw the band moving forward yet again, signing with Tiger Moth Records at the beginning of the year. The single 'Speechless', released in March, made a dent in the UK singles chart, and all the band’s EPs were re-recorded and gathered together as The Singles in April.

2008 has already seen the band pick up Best Band and best Female Singer at the Classic Rock Society awards, and  the new album Metamorphosis is due in April.

Fish

FISH 13th Star (CF14022007)

13th Star is the latest studio offering from Fish and was written and recorded during what was one of the biggest personal upheavals in Fish’s life. The album is a dark and reflective album although there is an optimism running throughout the album.

The material from the album was premiered during the lengthy European tour to promote the album that stretched from late summer through to early December 2007 and the tracks Circle Line, Square Go, Manchmal and Dark Star will already be familiar to people who saw Fish on tour.

In addition to the tour to promote the album which was produced by Calum Malcolm. Fish recorded a lengthy interview featuring the album for download as a podcast. The artwork for the album was designed by long time collaborator Mark Wilkinson.

We all know Fish as a performer, song writer, and rocker. A large part of this album is all about the first two, to an extra degree, and because of that it rocks. Quite melancholic and emotional... With 'Return To Childhood' out of the system this is Fish, the past now passed. It's good, it's personal, it's thoroughly enjoyable. ****½ Joe Geesin, www.getreadytorock.com

Anthony Phillips

ANTHONY PHILLIPS The Geese & The Ghost (Expanded edition)

Anthony Phillips was a founder member of the British Rock band Genesis.

The band recorded two singles and the album From Genesis To Revelation before leaving Decca and signing with Charisma to record the Trespass album. Anthony recorded the albums From Genesis To Revelation and Trespass and also performed a great many gigs before deciding to leave the band following a particularly bad bout of stage fright and also suffering a debilitating bout of bronchial pneumonia.

It was between the years 1970 and the release of his debut album The Geese And The Ghost in 1977 that many fans lost sight of Anthony Phillips. In actual fact much of the material that would make up the Geese And The Ghost would be written during this time.

The Geese and the Ghost was originally released in 1977 and features performances from Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins alongside Anthony.

The 30th anniversary of the original release of Ant's solo debut album is marked with the re-issue of the album as an expanded 2 CD version. The album itself has been expertly re-mastered from the original master tapes by recording engineer and co-producer of the original album Simon Heyworth. The location of the original master tapes brought to light the previously unheard Lute’s Chorus Reprise section of Henry: Portraits From Tudor Times which was excised from track at the final stage of completing the album as it was felt at the time that the track was a little too long. This has now been restored to its rightful place on the album in order that the track can be heard for the first time in the originally intended form.

The extra CD features a fascinating "behind the scenes" view of the initial stages of the recording of the album with the basic tracks of Ant and Mike Rutherford's original acoustic guitar parts for The Geese & The Ghost (Parts One & Two), Which Way The Wind Blows and Henry: Portraits From Tudor Times being mixed for the first time in isolation from the later overdubs that were added to the album.

MARKET SQUARE: Ollie Halsall, Eleanor McEvoy
Ollie Halsall

OLLIE HALSALL Abbots Langley (MSMCD145)

In 1980, following his early career with TIMEBOX, PATTO, TEMPEST and BOXER, guitarist supreme Ollie Halsall teamed up with former bandmate drummer John Halsey to record these remarkable sessions.

When the planned group never materialised, Halsall joined Kevin Ayers’ band, with whom he spent most of the next 12 years, until his untimely death in 1992.

This album is a snapshot of a particular period in the life of a somewhat eccentric but extraordinarily talented musician.

NEW RELEASES FROM HUX RECORDS: Formerly Fat Harry, Robin Dransfield, Ron Geesin
Formerly Fat Harry

FORMERLY FAT HARRY Goodbye For Good - The Lost Recordings  1969-72 (HUX096) [Release date 04.03.08]

Formerly Fat Harry are one the forgotten greats of late '60s British rock. The band was formed in London in 1969 by ex-Country Joe & the Fish bassist Bruce Barthol and two old friends from the Berkeley California folk music scene, Gary Petersen and Phil Greenberg. Fat Harry was soon signed up by the original Pink Floyd management company.

Playing a highly idiosyncratic brand of Americana that frequently experimented with jazz time signatures, the band played at two of the now legendary free concerts in Hyde Park, the 1970 Bath Festival, Phun City and many of the clubs of the era such as The Marquee in London.

Now, this previously unreleased collection of studio demos and live recordings (taken from the band's own archive) finally sets the record straight, delivering a heady mix of country, folk, blues and psychedelia, as well as including for the first time ever a version of their much-loved live favourite, 'Mariachi Riff'.

The accompanying 16 page CD booklet includes comprehensive liner notes, featuring interviews with the band, plus rare photographs from their own archive.

Robin Dransfield

ROBIN DRANSFIELD A Lighter Touch (HUX097) [Release date 12.05.08] 2-CD

Brothers Robin & Barry Dransfield joined together to form the British folk band the Dransfields in 1969. Into the early 1970s, British folk-rock was the buzz word among record labels, but out in the folk clubs the kings of the castle were this hot-headed acoustic brother duo from Yorkshire - blessed in uncanny harmonising like the Everlys and any number of bluegrass siblings out west, but virtually alone in the art on the British folk scene.

Turning down an offer to join the founding line-up of Steeleye Span, the brothers toured for several years as a duo, their shows including performances with Tom Paxton, Ewan MacColl, Martin Carthy, and the Watersons. The brothers eventually went their separate ways and Robin released his one and only solo LP, Tidewave, in 1980.

Now combining the first CD issue of that LP with a previously unreleased solo concert recorded in November 1972 at Medway Folk Club in England, this 2CD set is a timely reminder of the brilliance of Robin Dransfield, a lost giant of the early '70s English folk scene who has remained determinedly inactive in music-making for over 20 years. The revival starts here.

The 20 page booklet features an introductory liner note by noted music journalist Colin Harper, plus extensive notes by Robin Dransfield, including the story behind the making of Tidewave and his personal comments on each of the featured songs. Also includes several rare photographs from Robin's own archive.

Ron Geesin

RON GEESIN Biting The Hand BBC Radio Broadcasts 1969-1975 (HUX098) [Release date 12.05.08] 2-CD

A genuine 'one-off', with a dizzying range of work, Ron Geesin's name will be familiar to many rock fans through his collaboration with Pink Floyd. Geesin worked with the band on their 'Atom Heart Mother' LP, co-writing the side-long title track of that record.

One of Britain's leading avant-garde composers and performers, Geesin began his musical career in 1962, as a member of a jazz band, and is still going strong today, working on new projects into 2008.

This double CD, compiled and re-mastered by Ron Geesin himself, features a comprehensive collection of his BBC radio session recordings, most of which have never been released before now.

The accompanying 12 page CD booklet features extensive liner notes by Ron Geesin, along with his comments and recollections of each session and rare photographs from his own archive.

"Bearing witness to Ron Geesin on stage is an unforgettable experience. He stomps around roaring strange poetry and nearwords. He blows into petrol cans and draws the audience and the events of the evening into him. He plays "amazements" on the piano and a bizarre neo-banjo. He plays on the walls, the floor, chairs, the atmosphere - and the audience. Description is really superfluous." - John Peel

FOLK & JAZZ FROM DUSK FIRE : Mike Taylor, Old Wine, New Skins
Mike Taylor

MIKE TAYLOR Remembered (DUSKCD103)

One of the most gifted British jazzmen of his age, and one of the most audacious musical pioneers of all time, Mike Taylor died tragically young in late January 1969.

Mike Taylor left just two albums (Pendulum and Trio), together with co-writes with Ginger Baker for Cream's Wheels Of Fire album. Yet today, he is fast attaining cult status for his breadth of vision coupled to highly original composition and performance.

Mike Taylor Remembered is the most fulsome tribute of all. Recorded over two days in June 1973, at Denis Preston's Lansdowne Studios in London, it collects a trove of Taylor compositions, performed by a veritable who's who of modern British jazz, with around twenty musicians contributing differing orchestration for each of the ten album's 10 pieces.

OLD WINE NEW SKINS (DUSKCD104)

A diverse roster of recording artists - spanning half a century between the oldest and youngest - have contributed contemporary interpretations of traditional English songs to a new album released as a companion piece to The Folk Handbook: Working With Songs From The English Tradition, published in the UK and US this summer by Backbeat Books.

"Old Wine/New Skins", released via Proper Music Distribution this October 2007 on Market Square Records' Dusk Fire imprint, compiles 17 songs from the book in performances all but one of which have been recorded in recent years; many have been recorded specially for this album and thus are unavailable elsewhere.

Contributors, including English, Scots, Americans and other nationalities, count Lisa Knapp, Tom Paxton, James Yorkston, Robin & Bina Williamson and The Devil's Interval amongst others - renowned or about to be.

"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is close to the original, "Bark At The Moon" is good too. Dee Snider's "Crazy Train" is worth checking out too. It actually sounds bloody good.

Roger Chapman

ROGER CHAPMAN One More Time For Peace (MYSCD194)

Roger Chapman's new studio album is produced by Jim Cregan and presents ten new self-penned tracks.

While the album confirms Roger as a passionate, enduring and uniquely talented vocalist it further uncovers his niche as a mature, emotive and intuitive songwriter.

...he's cleverly written a back to the roots album that highlights his excellent writing, and facilitates his croaky delivery. This album should be appraised as more than just the proverbial slow burner, if only because there really is so much great playing, clever arrangements and so much lyrical imagery to digest www.getreadytorock.com

Family

FAMILY Old Songs New Songs

FAMILY were and still are one of the most revered bands to come out of the late Sixties early Seventies. Fronted by the manic but prolific vocalist ROGER CHAPMAN, Family were one of the most popular bands on the UK and European gig and festival circuit where their particular brand of “progressive art rock”, backed by Chapman’s on stage antics and a brilliant band excited audiences everywhere.

The band became a brilliant vehicle for the song writing partnership of Roger Chapman and CHARLIE WHITNEY who were joined along the way by a number of top musicians including JOHN WETTON and later TONY ASHTON.

The popularity of Family was reflected by top thirty singles including a number 4 with “In My Own Time” and 7 top thirty albums, with “A Song For Me” reaching number 4, “Entertainment” number 6 and “Anyway” number 7.

www.themusicindex.com/commerce/pages/html/family7.htm

This compilation was originally issued in 1971, during a break in the band's activities, and is here on CD for the first time.

The original album remixed earlier material and spawned a hit single too. Mixing late sixties rock and pop with touches of psyche, folk and a prog nod, the Roger Chapman led combo were popular at the time, and this is a good intro to the band at the time, with informative sleevenotes too, from GRTR's Pete Feenstra.

Chapman's a good singer and it shows here, and the rockier material shows some good guitar and bass work. Well worth investigating.

FEATURED ALBUM: 25 YARD SCREAMER
25 Yard Screamer

Imagine the progressive hard rock stylings of Rush mixed with the sensitivities of modern-day Marillion. You're getting close to 25 Yard Screamer.

Three lads from South Wales are set to widen a growing audience with the release of their third album, Cassandra.

They've been playing music together since 2002 and their latest album shows progress in leaps and bounds.

Guitarist Nick James says that the lead track on the album expands the myth of Cassandra who in Greek mythology was given the gift of prophecy but not of being believed. How could we apply that to the modern world, if at all?

The album can be enjoyed on different levels, but listeners will be drawn to the quality of the musicianship, the stirring choruses, and the fact that the band have fashioned something provocative and different.

Power and passion, Cassandra has it all - some absolutely wonderful playing from the band - Matt Clarke (bass), Nick James (guitar and vocals) and Donal Owen (drums). It's a remarkably confident and mature work, maybe highly Marillion influenced in places, but it's as good as anything the post Fish line up of that band have released. And believe it or not this was recorded and produced at home.

Classic rock of epic proportions. It would be a crying shame if this didn't reach a wider audience.
****½ www.getreadytorock.com

There is plenty of healthy imagination gone into this debut album...the band has no fear of getting in some complex melodies and some heavier ones too among the gentler and emotional moments...a certain one to watch'
Classic Rock Society (May/June 2007)

Blacklight, the epic 20-minute opening track, is full of chunky, chiming Alex Lifeson guitar and high-falutin' Neil Peart-style lyrics...Yet it's on the title tune where this Carmarthen combo really show their metal...It's a powerful, complex piece of work that's right up with the best of Brave-era Marillion. 7/10

 BOOKS FROM SAF PUBLISHING
Culture Clash

Don Letts: Grammy Award-winning film-maker, celebrated DJ, co-founder of Big Audio Dynamite, British black icon.

As a first-generation British-born black, Don Letts quickly learned to assimilate aspects of Jamaican culture into inner-city urban London life. Leaving school, he gravitated to Chelsea's King's Road, inhabiting the fashion world alongside Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren. As resident DJ at the fledgling punk club The Roxy, Letts pumped a roots-reggae soundtrack to a predominantly white audience that included members of The Clash and the Sex Pistols, forging a link between the two clashing cultures.

A chance meeting provided him with a Super-8 movie camera, the result of which was released as The Punk Rock Movie and set Letts on a career resulting in over 300 influential promo videos featuring Sex Pistols, Pil, the Slits, The Clash, Bob Marley, and even the platinum-selling Musical Youth, and most recently Franz Ferdinand. His feature films include Dancehall Queen, the Grammy Award-winning Westway to the World - his documentary on the Clash - and Clash on Broadway.
He recently directed feature documentaries for the BBC on Sun Ra, Gil Scott-Heron and George Clinton as well as a major BBC documentary for 2007, Soul Britannia, charting the impact of black music on British culture.

Alongside The Clash's Mick Jones in Big Audio Dynamite, Letts pioneered dance culture and sampling techniques, hanging out with Africa Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, and the cream of the New York City hip-hop scene.

Admired by Fellini, a friend of Bob Marley and John Lydon, and a documentarian of The Clash, Don Letts has never pigeonholed himself. This book is a first hand account, told in Letts' own words—it's highly visual, revelatory, irreverent, entertaining, and staunchly individual.

Don Letts was born in London, where he now lives. The authors will be participating in a national broadcast and press campaign to coincide with the publication of the book.

Gong

Originally published as a very limited subscription edition in 1994, Gong Dreaming 1 depicts the early years of Daevid Allen's path to England in the Sixties, through the formation of the legendary Soft Machine and on to the conception of what was to become his life's work: Gong. Covering his years in playing at the legendary UFO club, the first US tour with the then almost unknown Jimi Hendrix, the Paris student riots and much more, the book offers a rare insight into the hippie dream.

The original edition sold out before it was published, and copies are now highly sought after collector's items.

Micky Moody

Former Whitesnake guitarist MICKY MOODY's hilarious rock'n'roll tales from the British blues boom of the sixties.

By the age of nineteen, Micky Moody had left home twice, recorded two LPs for the famous Island label, fathered a child, and formed bands with Paul Rodgers (Free) and Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello).

Raised in Northern England in the Fifties, music represented a way for a working class lad to escape further education or the steelworks. With gritty wit and self-deprecating humour, Moody takes us to grotty hotels, the move to London, the legendary Marquee, brushes with John Mayall, the competition with other aspiring hopefuls to follow in the footsteps of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, whilst endless changes of line-up and the battle for recognition take its toll on all concerned.
