Santana

Carlos Santana is the most famous South American musician in the world with a Afro-Latin-Blues guitar sound that is truly unmistakable.

After a childhood playing mariachi music in Tijuana stripjoints, Santana moved to San Francisco and formed a multi-racial eponymous band that emerged from the late 60s West Coast scene to play a rapturously received set at Woodstock. Santana was considered by many to be the legendary festival's highlight. Overnight superstardom followed. Their next two albums, Abraxas and Santana III stayed at number one on the US charts for months. Santana went on to sell over 35 million albums and played to millions across the globe.

Santana's name has become synonymous with a groundbreaking potent mixed brew of blues, rock, gospel, soul, salsa and other Latin spices. He has also undertaken complex jazz odysseys in collaboration with John McLaughlin, Buddy Miles and Herbie Hancock.

Simon Leng runs the Santana fanzine Que Rico and had unprecedented access to the band.
