Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker (born in Sheffield, 1944) started his musical career in the pubs of Sheffield. His first band 'The Avengers' did not achieve great success although they did open for the Rolling Stones at Sheffield City Hall, which was received very well. It was here that his fan base started to grow.

His next band 'Joe Cocker Big Blues' built up a large following with the release of a cover of The Beatles 'I'll Cry Instead' - and even ventured to France where they played on American air bases. This was very popular and the Americans seemed to love Joe - however when he returned to England, luck ran out and 'Joe Cocker Big Blues' collapsed.

It wasn't for another year until Joe hit the big time, when he formed 'The Grease Band' with Chris Stainton.

When Denny Cordell (The producer of The Moody Blues, Procul Harum and Georgie Fame) heard a demo of 'The Grease Band' he immediately set them up with a residency at The Marquee.

Joe then went on to play all the major Rock Festivals including Woodstock - where he performed in front of half a million people.
