John Martyn Live was recorded at the Shaw Theatre London during the tour to promote the Apprentice album on March 31st 1990.

The album features a good mix what was then recent material alongside classic older material such as May You Never, Dealer, Couldn't Love You More, Outside In and John Wayne.

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour also features on two tracks, John Wayne and Look At That Girl which was about John Martyn's daughter who was actually in the audience at the time of the recording.
