GENTLE GIANT |
|
|---|---|
| Formed in 1969 by the Shulman brothers, Derek (vocals, guitar, bass),Ray
(vocals/bass/violin) and Phil (saxophone), on the collapse of their previous
group, Simon Dupree And The Big Sound. Kerry Minnear (keyboards/vocals),
Gary Green (guitar/vocals) and Martin Smith (drums) completed the first Gentle
Giant lineup which eschewed the pop/soul leanings of its predecessor for
an experimental, progressive style reminiscent of Yes and King Crimson. The
sextet was signed to the renowned Vertigo label in 1970 and, teamed with
producer Tony Visconti. Although deemed pretentious by many commentators,
there was no denying the band's ambition and individuality. Gentle Giant
split up in 1980.
